Confessions of a Bottleholic!!

Yes, it's true I have a confession to make.... MY 16 MONTH OLD CHILD IS STILL ON THE BOTTLE!!!! There I said it! However, if you take away 2.5 months (due to prematurity) then technically he is only 13.5 months old and it doesn't sound as bad! Truthfully I had every intention of weaning him before now, but one thing led to another and time just flew by and before I knew it he was 16 months and still on the bottle and sucking down formula!! Yikes, I gotta get cracking!! Originally, I had decided that I did want to wait a little past the "traditional" 12 months to give him a little extra nutrients, the boy just doesn't eat that much!! I have, however, officially decided that this will be the last can of formula that I purchase!!!! Enough is Enough!! I am ready to use that extra 30 bucks on something else!! I have been slowly increasing the whole milk to formula ratio, in hopes that the switch won't be too traumatic!! Any tips for successful bottle weaning would be much appreciated?! How long should I go with just milk in the bottle?! At this rate he'll be carrying that thing around till he's 3 and a half!! LOL Just kidding!! Can't you just picture JJ going to Primary for the first time with his bottle and saying, "what?? I was a preemie!" hahahahaha!! Yeah right, more like... what? My mom thinks I am a baby! Anywho, just thought I would make me my confession, now that I have done so publicly I am motivated to hold to my goal of weaning him once and for all!!!

Hey Candace, I know my sister in-law switched to a sippy cup once she got switched completely to whole milk and that has helped her little guy.

I was going to say the same thing, make the switch all together! Give him the sippy and milk, I PROMISE he will figure it out! Good luck! I miss you and that cute little boy!

Don't feel bad..my 2 & 1/2yr old still has a pacifer and if he has it his way he'll never get rid of it!!
I did that same as you with mixing milk & formula, but each time I gave him a bottle before naptime/bedtime, I would decrease the amount of ounces in it. Then by the end of the week or however long you give yourself he is down to nothing. It is a little more of a gradual weaning for him. Then once he is off the bottle only offer his sippy cup.
Good luck! :)

It's too bad we don't talk more when we're at family get-togethers; I would have told you this...I've seen JJ use a sippy cup, so I am just a firm believer in doing it cold turkey. Don't get me wrong, I know everyone is different, but I think it's worth a shot. I started trying Summer on a sippy cup at nine months and was so excited for her first birthday when she could start drinking whole milk after nursing and supplementing formula. I understand why you wanted to wait a little longer, but hopefully he'll take the switch well. As long as he doesn't go to sleep with a bottle of formula, he should be fine!! :)

CANDACE!!! I know everyone has given their two bits about the bottle. Ellie was on the bottle until she was almost 2. Don't feel bad. Just do what works for you!

You are a good Mom, and Joey is darling. He will get off of it eventually. No big deal:) It's not worth beating yourself up over dumb stuff like details. Good luck!
